El Paso Smelter
Asarco's smelter in El Paso, Texas, has been reporting TRI data since 1987.
The El Paso smelter was shut down for three years beginning in February 1999.

Explanation of Data:
Air:
In 1993 Contop flash-smelting technology was installed as part of a plant modernization.
The new technology reduced air emissions for the last half of the year.
1994 was the first full reporting year with Contop flash-smelting
technology in operation.
In 1997 more accurate emissions data became available as a result of
direct measurement. Previously, the plant used the maximum allowable emission rates in its
permits in reporting for TRI. Actual emissions were considerably below the level allowed
in the permits.
