In 1999, Asarco put the plant on care and maintenance due to historically low worldwide copper prices and the closure of several copper mines. The closure of copper mines led to a lack of concentrate.
Presently, copper is at a historic high and Asarco is hiring in Arizona and New Mexico.
In El Paso, Asarco continues to seek its air permit renewal to be able to resume operations.
In the meantime, Asarco employs people to maintain all of its operating permits and to ensure the plant remains environmentally protective of the community. Asarco continues to work on a viable plan for the future of the plant to bring back good-paying jobs to the El Paso community and to protect its investment in plant, property, equipment and people. |
