EPA soil tests during from 2001-2003 raised many questions for El Paso residents.  Unfortunately, incomplete information, conflicting statements, unsubstantiated rumors and speculation has resulted in widespread confusion and misinformation.

Asarco has provided this site, and included the views of others, to help you become informed on this issue.

The EPA began taking money from Asarco’s Environmental Trust Fund in 2003 to help fund residential yard remediation.  In 2005, Asarco signed a Unilateral Administrative Order with the EPA that allowed Asarco to take over the residential clean-up.  Asarco has not changed its position on the source of metals in the soil – lead based paint chips and dust, slag fines, fertilizers and arsenical pesticides.  However, Asarco believes it can be more cost efficient with its own money and reserved its right to seek cost recovery.
