Asarco's El Paso Plant has operated under a care and maintenance plan for seven years.  The plan is to keep the plant ready for operation. Asarco has been trying to get a routine air permit renewal since 2002.   The El Paso Plant is a modern, state-of-the-art copper smelter.

The plant itself covers 123 acres and the company owns additional land surrounding the plant.  In its last full year of operation, the plant produced 120,320 tons of copper.

When the plant is fully operational, it provides about 300 well-paying jobs including engineers, mechanics, boiler makers, accountants, computer operators, managers, supervisors, technicians and administrative staff.

When operating, Asarco has a direct and indirect local economic impact of about $300 million annually.
